How To Jailbreak iOS 8 – 8.1 On Mac With Pangu For Windows

Pangu iOS 8 – 8.1 jailbreak is currently a Windows only affair, with a Mac OS X version due for a release at a later date. And if you happen to be a sole owner of a Mac, then you still have the option to jailbreak your device using Pangu8 for Windows, without even having a Windows PC. Want to learn more how it’s done? Simply follow us past the jump.

The workaround is fairly simply; virtualize Windows on your Mac, run Pangu8 on it, and jailbreak as you would normally. And oh, it won’t cost you a penny since we’ll be utilizing the Windows 10 Technical Preview for this guide and the virtualization software in question is available as a free trial.

jailbreak ios 8 81 mac

Step 1: First and foremost, you’ll be setting up and installing / virtualizing Windows 10 Technical Preview on your Mac. Why Windows 10? Well because it’s available for free for testing purposes, and it is Microsoft’s upcoming latest and greatest, oh and most importantly, it does the job. Instead of laying down all the steps here.

Step 2: Now that Windows 10 Technical Preview is all set up and running on your Mac, the next step is pretty much self-explanatory; download Pangu8 from here.

Note: You’re required to download and install the latest version of iTunes to make the whole process move forward. Grab the latest version of Apple’s music / device managing software by pointing your browser to: apple.com/itunes/download

Step 3: Once you’ve Pangu8 setup on Windows 10 VM on Mac, the next logical step is to jailbreak your device. Simply follow our guide on how to do so:

And that’s it, from this point onwards you’re absolutely done with the jailbreak process. Though the steps might be a little tedious for some users, but that’s the best way around the fact that Pangu8 is only available for Windows, and not Mac OS X, as yet.

Here’s a brief timeline of how the jailbreak came into being.

When Apple released iOS 8 in September, many were looking to jailbreak their iPhones, iPads and iPod touches on the latest firmware.

With iOS 7, we were somewhat spoilt, with Evad3rs covering the earlier builds before Chinese team Pangu came through to jailbreak iOS 7.1 and up. But with iOS 8, we were back to square one.

Apple followed the initial iOS 8.0 release with 8.0.1, 8.0.2, and finally iOS 8.1 in October with support for Apple Pay and more. iOS 8.1 download links can be found here.

Soon after iOS 8.1 was released, Pangu surprised us all by dropping Pangu iOS 8 – iOS 8.1 Jailbreak for iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 5s iPad Air 2 and all other devices. The initial release was in Chinese, Windows only, and didn’t include Cydia. Saurik soon updated Cydia for iOS 8 but it required manual installation.

A week later, Pangu released version 1.1.0 in English language with Cydia bundled.

Pangu Untether 0.3 Pangu Untether 0.3 For iOS 8 / 8.1 Released, Then Pulled After Causing Issues On 64-bit DevicesFor iOS 8 / 8.1 Released, Then Pulled After Causing Issues On 64-bit Devices

The Pangu team today released an update to the Pangu 8.0-8.1.x Untether package, pushing the patch to version 0.3, but it was pulled almost immediately because it caused issues on 64-bit devices, such as the iPhone 6 / 6 Plus, iPhone 5s, iPad mini 2, 3 and iPad Air 1, 2.

The update was specifically aimed at jailbreak users with 32-bit devices like the iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, the iPod touch 5th-gen and iPad 2, 3, 4, iPad mini first-gen.

pangu 03 main

The v0.3 update to the jailbreak untether package was essentially meant to address heating and battery drain issues on the 32-bit devices running iOS 8 / 8.1.

Version 0.3 of this package fixes the issue where, on 32-bit devices (iPod 5, iPhone 4S/5, iPad 2, iPad Mini 1) a specific background process (launchd) would sometimes “spin”, burning CPU and battery, or even heating up.

While the patch fixed this issue for 32-bit devices, it caused problems for 64-bit devices and so it has been pulled from Cydia. Saurik posted the reasoning behind the update being pulled:

Some users on 64-bit devices are reporting mild to serious issues with this package. According to the Pangu team, they have changed almost nothing on 64-bit, and have not seen the issue themselves in their testing. We have pulled the package anyway, and the people at Pangu are working on doing a more detailed analysis of the issue.

If you’ve already downloaded the new and updated Pangu Untether package from Cydia and not having any issues, it’s best to stick to it. If you are having boot loop issues, unfortunately you can’t do much except restore the device and jailbreak again from scratch. But if you are on 0.3 now and and want to go back to version 0.2 right away without any sort of roadblocks. Simply download the Pangu 8.0-8.1.x Untether package from here, and install using a jailbreak app such as iFile.

For the rest of you having severe battery drain and heating issues, sit tight as the Pangu team will address this issue with a swift update, which should be available via Cydia fairly soon.

Jailbreak 8.1 Untethered + Manual How To Install Cydia Store

The Pangu team has delivered an untethered iOS 8 – 8.1 jailbreak when we least expected it. Having surprised us with the impromptu jailbreak for iOS 7.1.x, the Chinese team has come through with another solution for the all-new iOS 8.x. As mentioned in our initial coverage, dubbed as Pangu8, it works with iOS 8.0 all the way through to the latest iOS 8.1, and below, we’ll be showing you how to jailbreak your device using the tool.

The updated Pangu now includes Cydia as well. The following guide will help you jailbreak your iOS device on iOS 8.x and install Cydia on it.

Pangu jailbreak ios 8 81

Before you jailbreak, it is important to note:

  • Before jailbreaking, you must turn off any lock screen passcode or Touch ID (Settings > General > Touch ID & Passcode > turn off Simple Passcode) as well as Find My iPhone (Settings > iCloud > Find my iPhone), and naturally, your device will need to have spare storage space in order to run Pangu in the first place. Passcode and Touch ID can be turned on after the jailbreak and Cydia installation is complete.
  • Turn on Airplane mode. Airplane mode can be turned off once jailbreak is complete.
  • You must have an iTunes restored version of iOS 8 / 8.1 installed on your device for the jailbreak to work. If you updated from iOS 7.x to 8.x via OTA then the jailbreak won’t work. You can download iOS 8.1 from here, and restore using iTunes.
  • Make sure you backup your device completely before proceeding either through iTunes or using iCloud (Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup and turn on iCloud Backup). At this stage, there’s a reasonable chance that something may go wrong, and while many of you will undoubtedly be prepared to take this chance, you don’t want to lose your data for good.
  • You must have iTunes 12.0.1 or later installed on your PC before you can even begin. But that’s not it; it should also be running in the background when the jailbreak process is taking place.
  • Supported devices:
    • iPhone 6
    • iPhone 6 Plus
    • iPhone 5s
    • iPhone 5c
    • iPhone 5
    • iPhone 4s
    • iPad (2, 3, 4, Air, Air 2, mini 1, mini 2, mini 3)
    • iPod touch 5
  • Supported firmwares:
    • 8.0
    • 8.0.1
    • 8.0.2
    • 8.1

Given that it supports the latest iOS 8.1, we’d recommend updating prior to following this tutorial.

As we noted before, the tool only works on Windows, OS X version will be out at a later date.
